King Me : Dan Busey

King Me is an interactive installation that allows viewers to interpret news footage as a dynamic painting and painting as an alternative medium through which a viewer can consume broadcast media. A greenscreen stretched like a traditional painting on supports alludes at once to modernist movements like minimalism and color field painting and to the prevalent use of chromakeying technology in our image-based society. The viewer can only see the subject matter of the painting by watching it through the television, and this form of technological mediation also allows the viewer to become part of the work by appearing in front of the moving imagery in a way that static painting cannot—one is always observing a painting on a wall; in King Me the viewer can observe him- or herself observing and reacting to the content and the experience. Finally, the Rodney King video represents a revolutionary power shift in American society brought about by advances in consumer technology. An affordable handheld camcorder allowed an ordinary citizen to bear witness to the extreme brutality of an organization that is normally granted permission to operate without much transparency and only minimal public accountability. For the first time the footage captured on a camcorder dominated the national news for weeks after the event, forever shifting the balance of power between citizens and the agencies governing them. The camcorder used in this installation is meant to capture how we, as perpetual viewers in a media-saturated culture, consume and process the imagery that surrounds us.
